Business Scam On June 23, 2005 a downtown Excelsior business reported an incident where a subject attempted to obtain a refund for an expensive item that he had taken off the store's shelf. The subject is described as a heavy-set black male with longer grey hair. When the subject was unable to provide a receipt, the store employee refused to issue a refund and the subject left the store quickly in an unknown direction. Several months ago, the same subject was in the store and successfully obtained a refund for an item using the same method.
Business owners and employees are urged to always require a store receipt and photo identification before issuing a refund, particularly with customers who are unfamiliar to them. Also, do not hesitate to summon SLMPD officers by calling 911 if you have a suspicious person in your store.
