Community Scam Alert Several Police Departments in the West Metro area have been receiving reports of an advertising scam. In this case, the suspect enters local businesses and states he works for one of the major bank chains. He then states that he is offering them a chance to purchase advertising space on dry-erase boards that will be distributed to all the bank employees. The suspect then collects an amount of money from the businesses, and sends them out several dry-erase boards with the advertisement on them. The local businesses then think that the person was legitimate, and that their advertisements have been distributed out to all the employees and customers of the bank. Aside from the several copies sent to the local businesses, no other erase boards are being produced or distributed. The suspect does not work for ANY banks.
If you are approached by a person offering to sell you advertising space on dry-erase boards that will be distributed by a bank, please do the following:
Ask for a business card or corporate I.D.
Keep the business card or make a copy of the I.D. they provide
Explain you will have to run it past someone else, and either excuse yourself from the room or tell them you will call them at a later time with a decision.
Call 911 and explain the situation to the dispatcher.
Please remember that it is extremely helpful to the criminal investigation if our victims are able to help identify the suspect. If you are approached, please pay attention to distinguishing physical characteristics (tattoos, piercings, scars or marks), and also a license plate or accurate description of the vehicle they leave in.
If you have any questions or would like to report an incident, please contact the South Lake Minnetonka Police Department at (952) 474-3261.
